Sound Production: Multi-track Recording

Outcome 1

The only outcome of Multi-track Recording was to engineer the production of multi-track recordings. The key points from the module descriptor are:

  • Plan the production of a multi-track recording.

  • Select appropriate equipment for a multi-track recording.

  • Create a multi-track recording.

  • Technical operations for multi-track recording.

  • Appropriate documentation.

  • Health and Safety regulations.

  • Evaluate the multi-track recording and process.

I passed this outcome by recording a 12 track song within a group. The steps I took to complete this module were:

  • I planned within my group what song and studio we were going to record.

  • To choose suitable microphones/DI boxes for the recording of different instruments.

  • To set up the desk with correct gain on each microphone.

  • To correctly set up performers monitoring.

  • To set up monitoring playback.

  • To record tracks using Pro Tools through a desk without any distortion and with good clarity.

  • To be able to correctly perform punch in/out recording if needed.

  • Use dynamic control within a multi-track recording using audio processors.

  • To know and understand how to use the patch bay.

  • To know and understand how to use the interfacing external equipment.

  • To be able to power up and power down the recording equipment safely.

  • To log and store all the media and files correctly.

  • To operate equipment with recommended instructions and Health and Safety guidelines.

  • Keep a diary/log of the different sessions and what happened during them.

  • Write a 500 word evaluation of the multi-track recording sessions.

I really enjoyed doing this module because I find it very fun experimenting with different microphones and different instruments to achieve a good quality or unique sound.  I enjoyed recording songs that I know and trying to recreate the same sound.

I feel the Multi-track Recording module will benefit me a lot with my future career in the audio for multimedia industry, as it has given and helped develop my studio skills with the recording of different instruments and what microphones sound best where.  It also has given the knowledge of health and safety when in the studio.
