Audio for Multimedia

Outcome 1

For the first outcome of Audio for Multimedia I had to investigate the use of audio within a multimedia context. The key points of this outcome from the module discriptor were to understand:

  • Appropriate uses of audio to create the desired effect.

  • Sound sources.

  • Hardware and software requirements.

  • Storage requirements for digital audio.

I passed this outcome by writing a 500 word plan and spot sheet:

  • Describing what type and how I will get the audio to create the right sound for my chosen video.

  • Stating a variety of different sounds I will use for my video, both MIDI and recorded audio.

  • Descibing what hardware would be used to record/create the desired sound.

Outcome 2

For the second outcome I had to go out and capture and then edit audio using computer hardware and software. The key points of this outcome were to:

  • Create a plan of action.

  • Set computer hardware and software parameters for audio recording.

  • Manage and store audio files appropriately.

  • Edit audio.

  • Apply effects.

I passed this outcome by using Cubase and a Zoom portable recorder to:

  • Demonstrate effective file management and appropriately saving audio files for editing.

  • Edit audio to use in my video by top and tailing.

  • Apply effects to the audio i recorded. I used both dynamic and digital effects and other processes.

Outcome 3

For the third and last outcome of this module I had to apply prepared audio to a multimedia artefact. The key points of the outcome were to:

  • Compress and save audio for use within a multimedia artefact

  • Import and embed audio within a multimedia artefact

  • Synchronise audio within a multimedia artefact

I passed this outcome by using Cubase to finalise my audio and then by:

  • Applying compression then saving the file appropriately.

  • Importing and embeding the prepared audio ready to synchronise..

  • Effectively synchronise audio using iMovie to the video.

  • Produce a finalised video as a MP4 file.

I really enjoyed the Audio for Multimedia module, learning about how sound design works in the film, TV and game industry was very interesting. I also found going out to record Foley in our own time was good practice and fun. My favourite part of this module was the editing and mixing stage, I liked getting stuck into lining up sounds to the film and editing and creating the music and other sounds for my chosen film.

This module was the most useful to me as it covers an introduction into the career I would like to go down. It has given me a good start into developing the basic skills I learned throughout the year and has made me want to continue practicing and learning about audio for multimedia and sound design.
